A very touching & personal story of fiction. The author uses intense imagery & cultural nuance to fill the reader's senses throughout the entire book. The story of a young country girl enamoured with the thought of leaving her small town for greater experience, Amerika takes us through a rough world seen through her young rose tinted glasses. The author loses steam when it seems like her character will never take good advice or get over her pride but, struggling through the constant heartbreak she has endured she finds a way to be triumphant. Guided to the very end by only her mother's diary she learns that true unconditional love can sometimes come from those places we least expect it to be. She truly gives every reader an unlikely protagonist, who sometimes we are not sure may be able to touch those things she wishes for so dearly right out of the reach of her fingertips. However, when it is all said & done she leaves little to the imagination by summing up Amerika's story in a most excellent way. This story is truly an inspiration to anyone who may have a life rifled with doubt, anger, depression or fear. It captures every aspect of how struggle can define the coming victory. This book revisits some of the characters of A Bruised Heart but it is a totally different story. Like a follow up but not a sequel. I am not a reader but this book had my undivided attention. A definite recommendation.
As an educator in the Houston area, I believe this book is excellent. Amerika's character is an individual my students can relate to. Many of my students have come from the same background and by reading this book, I believe Amerika gives them hope and desire to continue following their dreams no matter what life throws at them. Excellent read!!!! I would like permission to share the story with my classes.
