Close Encounters With Addiction is a lecture Dr. Gabor Maté gave in Los Angeles in April 2011. He talks about his experience as a physician and how many of his patients suffer from mental illness, drug addiction and HIV, or all three.

This transcript is from a lecture given by Dr Gabor Mate, author of "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts" in 2011, and discusses the link between traumatic early childhood experiences and the development, later in life, of social and psychological problems in the adult. While it discusses, in depth and often, how those early experiences translate to later addictions, for me the discussion was more valuable for the broader picture it illuminated. We all know that an unloved, neglected, abused or traumatised childhood leads to a damaged personality and unstable behaviours and psychological problems later, but HOW and WHY does one link to the other? This discussion explains the causal relationship between what happens to the child and how (and why) those experiences later impact the adult.
The text itself is written much as I imagine it was spoken, in practical lay terms, and gives us a glimpse of what a fine human being Gabor Mate is. Thank goodness, for the thousands of patients he's helped, that he found his true calling. This discussion was very interesting and enlightening, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in why some people, and not others, end up with an addiction, and how our formative years can set us up for a later fall.

Close Encounters with Addiction edition by Gabor Maté Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

This is a wonderful book to have in your library if you work with individuals with addiction problems. This is a very knowledgable and delightful author. I really enjoy his work.
A lot of thinking outside the box and breaking the paradigm of drug abuse. Not quite sure if I agree on the level of sick he places in the nurtured debate, but he makes a lot of really good points.
Interesting speech and Q&A on healing damaged people.

This seems to be a short version of Gabor Mate's book on addiction, two years later.

Well done and thoughtful.
One of the best essays I have ever read
It just makes sense ! You will never cure drug addiction by sending people to jail ! So read it !
Leading edge thinking on addiction. Goes far beyond the current status quo. While remaining evidence based and practical. I so appreciate this mans work.
I love Dr. Gabor Mate's brilliant insight into how addictions come about. He looks underneath the surface and forces people to ask some very difficult questions. This book definitely helps you understand why people get addicted and how to deal with them. A must read for everyone; addiction or not. Gain insight into the struggle of our brothers and sisters.
