Our 5 year old son loves hearing these stories. He loves hearing them read over and over again However we edit them a bit when we read them. As he starts to learn to read more independently, we will shelf this book and replace it with other books then bring this book out later when he is older and better able to understand historical context. Basically Indians are 'savages' and always bad. And the racial divide between 'white man' and 'negros' is very apparent with 'negros' having a much lower social standing. Our son will need to understand this history eventually but right now I don't think how some of these stories are written is appropriate for a 5 - 9 year old black or white.Product details

Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans Second Reader Grade Edward Eggleston 9781148455624 Books Reviews
My new third grader is using this book for history. The sections are nice and short making them perfect for oral narration. I have found this to be one of the best books my son has narrated from. He has learned a lot of history in a fun and painless way. We also used this book for dictation lessons and copywork.
Love this book! As the title states, these are good, relevant stories centred around Americans from the beginning of this great country, but written in vocabulary easily understood by children, and the stories are of "edible length" for children of all ages and attention spans. We love it!
Interesting and informative short stories from United States history, each with a lesson about life. An easy read. Adults who read this book will learn also.
Amazing book. Every kid in America should be required to read this book.
Great history book for younger kids. Stories contain enough information for kids to learn a little about each person and they are short enough to hold their interest. I would recommend this book. Great addition to our homeschool curriculum.
This is a fantastic little book that brings history to life for young readers! My 8 year old loves to read the stories and is amazed by the connections he is making to historical figures. It's also a great time capsule to see how writers viewed American history years ago compared to today. Comparing and contrasting are easy discussions when combined with modern writings of these figures in our history.
My daughter is 5 years old and we just started this book. The stories are short and interesting, still I was worried that they wouldn't hold her attention. I was planning on doing one or two stories per week. Instead she wants me to read two new stories per day....and on top of that, will I please read the previous days stories before we are done?
All I can say is "Wow", my 5 year old enjoys these engaging history stories and I couldn't be more pleased.
When we are done with this book I plan to move on to the American History Stories also publish by Yesterdays Classics.
